A WORD ON PERCUSSION…
At Berrien Springs, we start percussion after 6-8 weeks of working with wind instruments. Any student who wishes to switch to percussion will need to audition for Mrs. Rosselit in late fall/early winter. The top 6 candidates, with parent permission will be switched from their current instrument to percussion. If you are renting an instrument, the rental company with swap out that instrument for a percussion kit.
Percussionists do more than play “the drums”. They must be able to read both clefs, copy and perform complex rhythms, be willing to play multiple instruments (sometimes simultaneously), be able to stand and wait for long periods of time, and be self-motivated. Percussionists will play instruments that include the snare drum, bass drum, xylophone, marimba, chimes, timpani, suspended cymbal, triangle, and tambourine. There are dozens more instruments as well. It takes a lot of work to be a percussionist.
